6. Plan of Emigration
- 8 -
are
One-third of the Chinese (32%) and about six-tenths of Portuguese (57%) and Macanese (60%) planning to emigrate. The non-Chinese have shown significantly higher emigration intention and more than four-fifths of them had this idea come to mind before the crackdown of the Beijing student movement on June 4, 1989. For the Chinese who consider to emigrate, half made their decision before June 4, but this figure doubles after June 4.
Comparing the profile of those Chinese/Portuguese/Macanese who will emigrate with the profile of all Chinese/Portuguese/Macanese,
we found the Chinese who plan to emigrate younger (15 -
29), better educated (secondary or above), more from civil servants and better-off households (monthly income $8,000+) and have less confidence in the political future of Macau.
Among the Portuguese and Macanese, there appears to be less deviations between the population profile and the profile of those who will emigrate except that the latter are skewed towards white collars and those who are not confident about the future.
