JIANG ZEMIN: “LARGE NUMBER OF INTELLECTUALS” NEEDED FOR FOUR MODERNISATIONS

Peking home service 2130 gmt 3 Aug 89

Excerpts from report

According to 'Zhongguo Shuili Bao' ['China Water Resources Journal'], General Secretary Jiang Zemin of the CCP Central Committee, Minister of Agriculture He Kang and Minister of Water Resources Yang Zhenhuai, accompanied by secretary Guan Guangfu of the Hubei provincial CCP committee, inspected the Yangtze [Changjiang] water resources committee and the Yangtze [Changjiang] academy of sciences. on the afternoon of 24th July. [Passage omitted on touring science academy and comments on floods.]

Comrade Jiang Zemin also said: The overwhelming majority of several generations of intellectuals ardently love the socialist motherland and the communist party. They work enthusiastically and selflessly for the prosperity of the motherland. Many of them studied abroad before national liberation and, with a pure heart like that of a new-born baby, returned home to participate in the construction of the motherland in the initial post-liberation period. They have a most profound knowledge of capitalist democracy and freedom. They stand together with the party and the government at critical moments.

Comrade Jiang Zemin said: In the past several years, we have slackened our efforts to conduct education in Marxism- Leninism, revolutionary traditions, patriotism, and national integrity, and our ideological and political work has become a weak link. The recent counter-revolutionary rebellion in Peking has enabled us to clearly understand these problems. Today's university students represent the future of our country. We should take an enthusiastic attitude toward them and at the same time set strict demands on them. We should strengthen education with a definite object in view and do so with meticulous care. They should be made to understand China's conditions and to grow up in a healthy way.

In conclusion, Comrade Jiang Zemin said: Intellectuals who are part of the working class must not separate themselves from the working class. To undertake the four socialist modernisations, we must have science, education and large numbers of intellectuals.

TRADE UNION FEDERATION PRESIDIUM URGES FRUGALITY AND INCREASED PRODUCTION

Peking ‘Renmin Ribao' in Chinese 29 Jul 89

Text of report

The third enlarged presidium meeting of the 11th executive committee of All-China Federation of Trade Unions today [28th July] passed a resolution on mobilising the workers throughout the country to deepen the movement for "double increase, double economy". The resolution is as follows:

The victorious convention of the historically significant fourth plenary session of the 13th CCP Central Committee indicated that our country has won a decisive victory in the struggle against unrest and counter-revolutionary rebellion. In this serious political struggle which involved the fate of the party and the country, the working class in our country experienced a grim test and showed its great power. At present, the tasks we face are: Respond to the calls of the fourth plenary session of the 13th Central Committee, and make new contributions to further stabilising the situation and developing the economy, as well as strive for a complete victory in preventing turmoil and quelling counter- revolutionary rebellion. At present, the economic situation is rather grim. Workers of various nationalities throughout the country must further mobilise themselves, deepen the movement for “double increase, double economy”, prevent a slide in the economy, and secure a continued, stable and co- ordinated development of national economy.

We must seriously study the spirit of speeches made at the fourth plenary session of the 13th CCP Central Committee and the spirit of the speeches of Comrade Deng Xiaoping, improve political consciousness, unify thought, march in step and strike back on the intervention, destruction and wanton interference caused by the anti-communist and anti-socialist forces inside and outside the country. We must explicitly uphold the four cardinal principles, resolutely resist the thought of bourgeois liberalisation and various degraded thoughts, oppose corruption and influence the entire society with the advanced thought and spirit of the working class.

With the high level of sense of social responsibility characteristic of the working class, we must, according to the demands for adjusting enterprise structure and product structure, work hard to increase the readily marketable products and products generating foreign exchange, continuously improve quality of products, accomplish plans by
