Chinese PLA CGS heads military delegation to B desh Gen Chi Haotian, CGS of the Chinese PLA, arrived in Dhaka on 7th March on a week-long official visit to Bangladesh. Chi Haotian, who is leading an eight-member military delegation, was met by Bangladesh army COS Lt- Gen Attiqur Rahman and other senior military leaders at the capital's international airport. Chinese Agriculture Minister in India

A delegation

of Chinese agricultural experts, led by their minister, He Kang, called on the Minister of State for Agricultural Research and Education, Hari Krishna Shastri, in New Delhi on 7th March. Indian Petroleum Minister of State in Vietnam delegation of the Indian Ministry of Petroleum led by Minister of State Brahma Dutt paid a working visit to Vietnam from 2nd-5th March. On 4th March, the Indian guests were received by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Do Muoi, who said that Vietnam would send personnel to India to study its experience in developing the oil and gas industry. The same day, the Director of the Vietnam General Oil and Natural Gas Department, Truong Thien, had working sessions with Brahma Dutt and his party. During their stay, the Indian delegation attended a ceremony to launch an Indian ship's geological survey 1 the southern continental shelf of Vietnam and the opening of a Hydrocarbons India Ltd. Indian External Affairs Minister in Nepal External ffairs Minister, Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, held a meeting with the Nepalese Foreign Minister, Mr Sailendra Kumar Upadhyaya, in Kathmandu on 6th March. Burmese minister in Japan, emergency relief pledged (Excerpts) Foreign Minister Sosuke Uno on Sunday [26th February] urged Burma honour its international pledge to hold multi-party general elections in May 1990, Foreign Ministry officials said. Uno told Burmese Minister of Health and Education U Pe Thein that Japan "strongly hopes" the Burmese government will hold the elections "in a form that can reflect the will of all Burmese people". Thein was in Tokyo to attend Emperor Hirohito's state funeral... In response Thein pledged that the Burmese government would make the utmost effort to live up to its international commitment by meeting the election timetable, the officials said...

Uno took the occasion to inform Thein that Japan will give 18m yen worth of emergency relief to Burma to help cover damages caused by a massive fire that burnt down more than 2,000 houses on 16th February...(Kyodo in English 0933 gmt 26 Feb 89)

Chinese agency quotes Portuguese President on Macao's Basic Law Answering questions at a meeting with responsible people of various mass media institutions in Macao, Portugese President Soares indicated on 3rd March that China was responsible for the formulation of the Macao Basic Law and that Portugal would pay attention to this matter and co-operate with China. He said: Macao's future will depend on the Basic Law. Both China and Macao hope that social stability will be maintained in Macao and that no riot will happen, and both sides hope to solve problems through dialogue. The Basic Law Drafting Committee includes many Macao representatives, so it is believed that the drafting work will progress smoothly. (Zhonggue Xinwen She, Peking, in Chinese 1224 gmt 3 Mar 89)

Chinese-Japanese vice ministerial meeting, Li Peng visit planned Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Shuqing arrived in Tokyo on 4th March for the ninth regular consultations with Japanese Foreign Ministry officials. (Xinhua in English 1241 gmt 4 Mar 89)

Japan and China agreed on 6th March to set an official visit by Chinese Premier Li Peng to Japan in mid-April, a Foreign Ministry official said. The agreement came during a one-day vice ministerial-level meeting between the two countries in Tokyo. Li is expected to make a four-day official visit to Japan from 12th April. During the session, the Chinese side reiterated its demand that Japan take proper measures towards settlement of the Kokaryo dormitory issue. (Kyodo in English 1203 gmt 6 Mar 89)
