The Interior Ministry announced on 6th March that it has approved applications from 455 former Taiwan soldiers stranded on mainland China during the 1940s to return to Taiwan for permanent residence. (Taipei in English for abroad 0200 gmt 8 Mar 89)

NPC meeting told relations with Taiwan should be further promoted Economic co-operation and cultural exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan should be further promoted, a senior government official in charge of Taiwan affairs told a meeting in Peking on 9th March. The indirect trade volume between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait has totalled 8bn US dollars-worth by the end of last year, director of the Taiwan affairs office of the State Council Ding Guangen told the seventh meeting of the seventh NPC Standing Committee, which opened here today. Nevertheless, the director said, complaints about the mainland's investment environment are often heard from some Taiwan compatriots. So, relevant provinces and government departments will be asked to make further studies on how to improve the bilateral trade this year, Ding promised. Some special economic co- operation zones for Taiwan investors will also be opened on a trial basis. The director called for better consultation services for Taiwan investors. Ding said, "evident achievements have been made in the exchanges, but the progress is not as satisfactory as one would wish". In the past year, he noted, a certain relaxation has been perceived in the policies of the Taiwan authorities concerning the mainland, but some "unreasonable" regulations still exist serving as artificial obstacles to the exchanges... China invites Taiwan to take part in sports meetings on mainland He Zhenliang, vice-president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), on 9th March invited athletes in the Taiwan region to send teams to the 11 Asian championships scheduled to be held on the mainland in 1989. In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, he said: "We sincerely welcome the Taiwan region to send teams to these championships and we will provide them with all conveniences they need." When asked what name Taiwan should assume in participating on the mainland, he noted that the International Olympic Committee and other world sports organisations had already adopted special resolutions on the name, flag, emblem and song for Chinese Taipei. Mongolian trade delegation in Inner Mongolia (FE/0401 A3/4) The MPR economic and trade delegation led by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Supply of the MPR, concluded its visit to Inner Mongolia, and left Hohhot for home on 5th March. During its stay, the

delegation held “frank and sincere” discussions on trade and economic and technological co-operation with Liu Zuohui, Vice Chairman of the autonomous regional government and leader of the Inner Mongolia economic and trade delegation.

Both sides signed agreements on establishment of brick, tile, candle, paper and toothpaste plants, processing of imported pig and camel skin and planting of vegetables and fruit trees. They exchanged views on exchanges in medicine and health, and scientific and technological fields, developing transport, post and telecommunications, opening trade outlets on both sides, establishing friendly regional ties, and promoting exchanges between enterprises. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister meets Macao governor During a meeting with Macao Governor Melancia today [7th March], Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Zhou Nan said that both sides had reached a consensus on the three problems of localising civil servants, making the Chinese language a statutory language and localising the law. Zhou Nan said that he had exchanged views with the Macao governor on the implementation of the Sino-Portuguese joint declaration and the relevant issues, adding that they had reached unanimity on many problems.

The above three problems are regarded as three major difficulties during Macao's transitional period. Some people here pointed out that unanimity reached between China and Portugal on the three issues suggests that there has beer a turn for the better in the settlement of the problems. Zhou Nan and his wife arrived in Macao this morning at the invitation of the Macao Governor. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhou Nan concluded his three-day visit in Macao and returned to the mainland on 9th March. Zhou said that through his visit, he is fully convinced that Macao has enjoyed a stable political situation and a steadily developing economy since the signing of the Sino- Portuguese joint declaration in 1987. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister in Japan Japanese Foreign Minister Sosuke Uno met in the Diet today [6th March] with Liu Shuqing, Vice Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister who had come to Tokyo to attend the ninth regular consultation between the Chinese and Japanese diplomatic authorities. Uno again stressed that the Japanese-Chinese treaty of peace and friendship should last forever...
