Economic Relations and Trade announced that it had set up a Department to deal specifically with trade with Taiwan. its part Taiwan announced that it was considering the drafting of a law banning direct trade with the mainland. Those offending against this ban would face a sentence of up to 3 years. Nonetheless statistics released during the month showed that there had been really considerable contacts over the last year. Trade was said to be in excess of $2.4 billion. Four hundred and fifty thousand people from Taiwan were said to have visited the mainland and some 3.4 million letters had been exchanged.
