Dame Jill Knight MP telephoned today, 19 October. She had three points:

1.

2.

3.

In response to the Secretary of State's letter of 18 September, she will be pleased to come and see

I have tentatively suggested a meeting in the House of Commons in the evening of 31 October or 1 November, but will need to check this timing with the Secretary of State:

As President of the Friends of Hong Kong, Dame Jill has been asked whether they could print the Secretary of State's letter of 18 September (which they know about but have not seen) in the "Hong Kong Monitor". Dame Jill has replied that she certainly could not agree to that without first seeking the Secretary of State's agreement. A problem might be that a group of friends in Taiwan which includes a "formidable woman" who runs two newspapers, would also print it.

Dame Jill would be prepared to precis the Secretary of State's letter very tactfully if that seemed the answer;

After her private meeting with the Secretary of State, Dame Jill will want to bring a small delegation of friends to see him . (She recalled that their call on Sir Geoffrey Howe, scheduled for the very day of the Cabinet reshuffle in July, had been cancelled.)

Grateful if you could keep in mind the possible need for briefing for the Secretary of State by end-October (I shall confirm date of his meeting with Dame Jill as soon as possible), and advise soon of the advisability of printing his correspondence with her.
