Thank you for your interesting letter of 1 December about the Taiwanese attitude and behaviour over the future of Hong Kong. I found your "crystal ball" impressions of what Taiwan might wish to see happen to Hong Kong pre- and post- 1997 persuasive.

I am left with the impression that, although the Taiwanese may be able quite comfortably to adopt a political opinion on whether or not they favour Hong Kong's entry into the Chinese fold, it will be infinitely more difficult for the Nationalist authorities to plan successfully to capitalise on Hong Kong's change of status until they are clear in their own minds what Taiwan's status will be post 1997.
