FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE: MR MAUDE'S EVIDENCE ON HONG KONG,

13 DECEMBER

1. I submit objectives and short points to make for Mr Maude's

appearance before the Foreign Affairs Committee on 13 December.

2.

Mr Maude will be giving follow up evidence on the Government's

interim reply to the Committee's Hong Kong Report and evidence on

the provision for Vietnamese boat people in the Winter Supplementary

Estimates. Part of the evidence is expected to be broadcast live on

BBC and on Hong Kong television.

3. The Committee Clerk will let us have an indication of the

expected line of questioning on Monday afternoon. Mr Holt's minute

of 6 December gives some idea of the Committee's initial reactions to our interim report.
