The amount of pocket money given to the non-volunteers (US$ 30 for each adult and US$15 for each child) is less than that given to
volunteers under the UNHCR scheme, in order that there should be
some financial incentive to volunteer. The reintegration assistance paid to the Vietnamese authorities is based on a per capita payment of US$620 for each returnee. This covers transport within Vietnam, clothing, food, medicines, housing, vocational training and essential equipment.

Financial provision has been made in the Winter Supplementary Estimates for up to £1.3 million to be spent on repatriating Vietnamese boat people from Hong Kong to Vietnam in this financial year. (It is hoped that the cost of future repatriation exercises will be considerably lower. But it is impossible to say at this stage precisely how much this will be future yearso

12. As we notified the House in answer to a written Parliamentary
Question on 12 December, the Government has also made financial
provision for up to £250,000 to be spent on monitoring in the current financial year.
