FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE: EXPENDITURE ON VIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE

1 When Mr Maude gave evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee on 13 December, the Committee asked if we could let them have a note of expenditure by HMG and the Hong Kong Government on Vietnamese boat people. The Clerk has indicated that the Committee would like to have a full breakdown of expenditure by year, provision and recipient and as much detail as possible about repatriation costs.

I submit a draft note.

2. The Committee have asked for the note by noon on 15 December in order to meet the printers' deadline. Private Office have indicated that in view of the Secretary of State's absence and on the understanding that the note is a strictly factual document and has been approved by Mr Maude, they would be content for the Secretary of State to see the note in final form after it has been

sent to the Committee.
