Money will be found from savings in other areas. What areas? the diverted funds be replaced in due course?
Will
As indicated in the Winter Supplementary Estimate, money was found from savings on the UK contribution to the United Nations Transitional Assistance Group in Namibia. Savings arose because both size of UN force and cost of UK troop contribution substantially less than originally planned. Thus no need to replace
diverted funds.
Committee understands that Hong Kong Government have requested
additional funds. How much and for what purpose?
Hong Kong Government have requested £10.6 million in current financial year for improvements to emergency accommodation (£5.6 million) and long term accommodation for boat people (£5 million for Tai a Chau). Treasury have agreed to this expenditure plus £0.25 million for cost of monitoring repatriation. Parliamentary authority is being sought for this expenditure in the
normal way.
Request from Hong Kong Government for further assistance with accommodation in next financial year will be considered in context of Main Estimates exercise when we see how the situation is
developing.
