→ Staff resign for a variety of reasons: marriage, disillusion with career prospects, dissatisfaction over pay, change of domestic circumstances (bereavement, divorce etc.), problems over schooling and lack of opportunity for spouse to pursue independent career. Amongst junior grades unwillingness to serve abroad and disenchantment over career prospects are the most frequently stated reasons: single women account for the highest proportion of resignations.

4. Can you provide a list of secondments from the Diplomatic Service in the last year, and comparisons, for the last five years? What are the comparisons, figures for secondments into the Diplomatic Service? How do these figures compare with the Home Civil Service?

Tables I and II below contain details of inward and outward secondments between the private sector and the Diplomatic Service from 1 January 1983 to 31 December 1988.

Tables III to VII compare the secondment statistics of all Government Departments for 1983-87 according to the following criteria:

Secondment must last longer than three months;

Only Grade DS9 (EO) and above are included;

The receiving organisation must be more than arm's length from Government (eg non-depart- mental bodies, research councils etc are not included).

Statistics for 1988 are not yet available.

In addition to our interchange programme with the private sector we have a similar exchange of staff with other Government Departments, non-departmental bodies and international organisations. At present there are 50 DS staff out on loan in this way, and 201 staff from such organisations working in the DS.
