WHAT SCOPE FOR FLEXIBILITY ON NATIONALITY?
Acutely conscious of wish of people of Hong Kong to secure some form of assurance for themselves and their family. We will do everything we can to enhance their security.
We have made it clear that, while it would not be realistic for
right of abode in this country to be given to all 3.25 million British nationals in Hong Kong, we are looking urgently and sympathetically at scope for flexibility.
INTERNATIONAL SOLUTION
Aware of proposals for international guarantee for all Hong Kong people. But do not believe that this would be a viable way forward.
Some countries are already taking significant numbers of Hong Kong people for settlement. Doubt if they would be able to make a commitment of the order of magnitude necessary to accommodate the entire population of Hong Kong.
