Joint Declaration remains cornerstone of our policy. Best thing

we can do for confidence and stability in Hong Kong is to reaffirm our strong commitment to Joint Declaration.

Joint Declaration was and is very good agreement for Hong Kong.

Best means of guaranteeing prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Destiny of Hong Kong inevitably bound up with destiny of China. This is historical and geographical reality. Any viable future for

Hong Kong must depend on successful and secure coexistence with

China. That objective enshrined in Joint Declaration.

Important thing now is to hold China to its obligations under ful?

Joint Declaration. We look to Chinese Government to restore our

confidence in its commitment to these obligations.

If we were to try to renegotiate Joint Declaration;

As I told the House on 6 June, we must all share the hope that

sane and balanced government will be swiftly and securely restored

in Peking. But in present circumstances there can be no question of

continuing normal business with Chinese authorities.

In practical terms this means that normal JLG work will not

proceed for the time being. But our JLG Office in Hong Kong are

maintaining informal contact with their Chinese opposite numbers at working level.
