Foreign Affairs Select Committee Report
27th June 1989
Foreign Affairs Select Committee is hoping to publish its report on Friday. I gather that three areas of possible contention among the Members are:-
1.
2.
3.
The means of appointing a Chief Executive
The passports issue with two Members of the Committee;
D. Canavan and M. Welsh, likely to vote for an "insurance policy" but the rest of the Committee firmly rejecting the Hong Kong Chinese case.
The "Armageddon scenario" with some Members of the Committee thinking that steps should be taken now to try and make continguency arrangements with other countries, particular European member states. However, the majority of the Committee is likely to oppose this.
