TRANSCRIPT B: SELECT COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG 12 JUN 1989
SIR DAVID VILSON :
-10-
It has been said by some people since the recent
tragedy that the Joint Declaration should be torn up,
I
do not think that makes any sense because without a Joint
Declaration, you simply have nothing.
remains, the fact of where Hong Kong is
The fact of 1997
on the coastline
of China
-
remaine.
The Joint Declaration itself is a remarkably good
document.
As I soe it,
what is now so important is to
ensure that that Joint Declaration is carried out to the
full and that is what is important, rather than any
thoughts of trying to scrap it and produce something
different.
MR. MICHAEL JOPLING:
I am sorry! I was not really asking you whether it
should be scrapped or torn up, I said did you think
there should be an improved Declaration, by which I mean
that one could amend it in order to carry out that
remedial action you were talking about.
