TRANSCRIPT B; SELECT COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG 12 JUNE 1989

-5-

MR.

TBD ROWLANDS:

Have you any idea what sort of size or presence the

Chinese Authorities would envisage the Chinese military

would have after 1997?

Is it envisaged to be a token

representation or have you had any thoughts as to whether

they are planning a very significant presence in the heart

of Hong Kong itself?

SIR DAVID WILSON:

Ve do not have any clear idea on that, although we

have been seeking to establish it.

The nearest we have got to it is that the Chinese

have said on a number of occasions that it would be

considerably smaller than the present British garrison.

MR. BOWEN WELLS:

Does it not make it, Sir David, totally

inappropriate in the light of current circumstances,

that

the Chinese People's army should occupy *HMS Tamar" in the

centre of Hong Kong island?
