SIR DAVID VILSON (CONT):
Legislature, and on the question of the election of a
Chief Executive.
We have not yet seen the culmination of that proce60
because up to now what we hava ie the two Councils getting
together. They do have on them people from different
political groups, but we have not yet got to the stage in
the process where all those political groups have rallied
round the position of AMBLCO, we may be moving in that
direction,
If we do then I think that is something of
considerable significance.
Up to now, looking at Hong
Kong and the map of Hong Kong, people have only been able
to see widely divergent views on the rate of progress
towards a more representative government. Now one 6086
the beginnings of a more unified view and that I think is
something of great importance.
KR BOVEN VELLS:
Sir David, if we can put the evente in Peking in
historical background, is it not true that Hong Kong has
seen similar bloody and appalling events on the mainland
of China, when the Communtet takeover took place firstly
in 1949-50, and then during the Cultural Revolution and in
several other periods of tension in the past 45 50
years.
