HONG KONG DEPARTMENT: FAC/ENQUIRY: NATIONALITY
In
1. Please refer to your minute of 8 June. I assume that you only want from us an answer to question II. Gibraltar's case, this is governed by Section 5 of the 1981 Nationality Act. All Gibraltarian British Dependent Territory Citizens enjoy a similar concession to that given to the Falkland Islands, and are entitled to British Citizenship. To date, approximately 60% have taken up this right. Excluding expatriots, there are now about 12,000 Gibraltarians who have British citizenship as a result of this right and a further 8,000 who have the right to British citizenship if they so claim. There are also between 7,500 and 8,000 British expatriots, all servicemen and families, who also live in Gibraltar.
