SECRETARY OF STATE'S APPEARANCE BEFORE THE FAC ON WEDNESDAY

14 JUNE.

1. As you know, the Secretary of State will be appearing before the FAC to give oral evidence on Hong Kong on 14 June.

2. The Secretary of State will also be holding a briefing meeting with officials at 0830 on Monday 5 June in preparation for his appearance before the Committee. Gillmore is not at present certain that he will be free to attend this meeting. However Mr McLaren is happy to lead the briefing team; he would expect to be accompanied by Mr Fifoot (Legal Advisers) and by Mr Paul, Miss Marsden, Mr Footman and Mr Wood from Hong Kong Department. Mr Holt is at present on leave but I could attend if a PRU presence is required. You may also wish a representative from News Dept to be present.

3. I would be grateful if you would let me know the Secretary of State's wishes in this matter.
