But what about the three and a half million Hong Kong people who hold British passports who might want to come home

they don't have a right of abode here, should they?

D. HI

Well that is a diferent issue that the committee is looking at, the question of where people if people wish to leave Hong Kong, whether they should have what they call insurance policies, the right to come here if they really (unclear] Obviously we want to see, and most people in Hong Kong want to stay there, but the question of their nationality is one that obviously the committee will be looking at very closely.

K.W:

Very briefly, should we have sanctions against China at theis stage?

D.H:

I think not, no. I think what we should have is firmness against China, that we want Hong Hong Kong properly safeguarded and secured and not messed about.

K.W:

Finally and briefly, what about the position of Taiwan, which surely is a very difficult one now?

D.H:

Well, the Chinese will be wanting, as they limp back ... try and rejoin the civilized world, which will take a long time, to try and mend their fences and secure Taiwan in the future, they will have to make major concessions, obviously, on all kinds of law, defence and everything else to get a good hearing in Taiwan, as indeed in Hong Hong.
