TRANSCRIPT E SELECT COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG 12 JUIĖ 1989

MR LESTER:

Could you give us the latest figure for arrivale in Hong Kong and the present state of rate of resettlement?

SIR DAVID VILSON:

They are horrifying figures,

18,000 people arriving.

This year we have had

In May we had 9,000. Some days

recently we have had over 1,000 people arriving. And for this month, June, the rough average has been about 470

people every day

women and children.

Perhaps I could make the point of man, WODEN And children because it does not always coma across in the reports I have seen that half of the people arriving are under the age of 20 and one-third of them are childen of 15 and lese. This is a migration of families.

KR LESTER:

What progress are you making now with the arrangements for screening new arrivals.

Ve have seen on

our television screeds some of the very sad scenes of people in open boate, tied up to uninhabited islands, and

I wondered what progress had been made in recent time?
