1 have been rather alarmed by some of the
even
implications of your remarks in Some of the answers in the
last few minutes, Sir David. For example, you implied
that if in fact Hong Kong and Britain proceed to establish
a Legislature with 50% directly elected or 75% or
100% by 1997, somehow this will endanger British-Chinese
in 1997 relationships or that it would all be torn down
and that therefore one has got to act very very
cautiously.
Am I inferring wrongly from these remarks you have
made about all things that could be torn down in 1997 if
we went faster towards a really genuine democracy between
now and 1997 in Hong Kong?
SIR DAVID WILSON:
I do not think the words you attributed to me
words that I have used at all,
are
What I have said is that continuity is important and
it is important to put in place something which is likely
to last.
