count that time towards residency. You dismiss it on the
grounds that it would be unfair and therefore you feel it
would be unacceptable and possibly undermine
Government's immigration policy. Could you just comment
on that?
MR RENTON:
Yes. I am glad, if I may say 50, that you came back
to that point because I noticed that you picked us up on
the word "unfair" and, in essence, unfair to whom? It has
to be said in essence unfair to others who come here to
study from other parts of the world.

here and are given permission to come here, ag Mr Bowen
Vells will well know, to study and not as an avenue for
settlement.
In fact,
students and others who have been in the UK
for 10 years or more, they may be able to obtain
settlement on the basis of the length of residence, what
is known as the long residence concession.
