Mr Renton

LETTER DRAFTED FOR SIGNATURE BY

(NAME OF SIGNATORY)

I look forward to appearing before the Foreign Affairs Select

Committee on 24 May. There is just one point I wanted to raise

with you on a personal basis before the session.

I know that the Committee was briefed by Mr McLaren of the

Foreign Office about certain undertakings as to settlement in

this country which have been given to certain people who have

given special service which would make them particularly

I

vulnerable after 1997.

hope you and the Committee would

agree that it would not be sensible to discuss this in open

session, and I hope you may therefore be able to agree that I

shall not be questioned on this subject on 24 May. If the

Committee have any questions on that subject I should of course

be happy to answer on some other occasion, though I think it

unlikely that I shall be able to add to what Mr McLaren has

already told you.
