in preparation for Mr Renton's appearance before them on

Although the memorandum

attention on points to be covered in briefing - and it is already clear

that it will assist the Clerk in giving advance warning of likely areas

of questioning. If it is to be submitted it must go in no later than

17 May: but Mr Renton is likely to get better notice of questions

which will help us considerably in targeting the briefing if it were to

go in on 15 May, immediately after next weekend. We are hoping therefore

that it might be considered by Mr Renton in time for it to go to the Home

Secretary over the weekend.
