FAC ENQUIRY ON HONG KONG

1.

Sir R Evans telephoned this morning to thank me for the transcripts of the Secretary of State's and the Governor's evidence which I had sent him and to say that he had now been asked to give evidence himself on Wednesday 17 May. He had agreed to do so. The Clerk had told him that the Committee would want to seek his views on Chinese perceptions of, and attitudes to Hong Kong.

2. Sir R Evans will be coming into the Office on the morning of Monday 8 May (his only day in London before 17 May) to go over the ground with me.

3.

Sir P Haddon-Cave (former Chief Secretary in Hong Kong) who had also been asked to give evidence was in touch last week to say that the Committee no longer wished him to do so orally. They had however invited him to put views in writing. He was considering whether to take up this invitation.
