Charles Mackay, the Chairman of Inchcape Pacific, spoke to me today (14 April) about the British Chamber of Commerce submission to the Foreign Affairs Committee (calling for direct elections before 1997). He said he had managed to have the first draft toned down but still he did not agree that direct elections were a requirement for the continuation of good business in Hong Kong. In any case such a pronouncement in the name of the British business community would not strike a favourable chord with the PRC or do anything to improve British business prospects north of the border.
