INFORMAL BRIEFING SESSION, 6 APRIL 1989

Mr McLaren, supported by Mr Fifoot and Hong Kong Department, briefed the Foreign Affairs Committee on 6 April. The Chairman and

six members of the Committee were present.

In accordance with the Committee's wishes, the briefing focussed on the relationship between the FCO and the Hong Kong Government; likely Chinese sensitivities, both in relation to the Enquiry and more generally; and the way in which policy on Hong

Kong is formulated in China.

Mr McLaren also took the opportunity to brief the Committee in some detail on Undertakings. This prompted a lively discussion.
