Comparison with other Dependent Territories

WHY ARE BRITISH NATIONALS IN HONG KONG TREATED DIFFERENTLY FROM

THOSE IN GIBRALTAR AND FALKLANDS?

British nationals in Hong Kong are treated in same way as those in most other Dependent Territories. As Committee will appreciate, special considerations apply in cases of Gibraltar and Falklands.

Falklands obviously in a special category because of war. Falkland Islanders were given right of abode in UK by British Nationality (Falkland Islands) Act in 1983.

Gibraltar member of the EC by virtue of British accession to the Community in 1973.

ARE BRITISH NATIONALS IN HONG KONG BEING TREATED DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHER BRITISH NATIONALS AS FAR AS EC COMMON FORMAT PASSPORTS IS

CONCERNED?

No.

Being treated exactly the same as British Dependent Territories Citizens in other dependent territories, except for

Gibraltar.

Also being treated the same as other categories of British Nationals who are not UK nationals for EC purposes and who will be receiving passports in a similar format, ie machine readable with burgundy-coloured cover, but without EC references.
