Nevertheless there are channels for people from Hong Kong, as from elsewhere in the world, to be allowed entry to Britain for settlement purposes in certain circumstances:

businessmen/investors

those with special skills or experience may be granted work permits

some limited categories (eg sole representatives of overseas firms) may enter without work permits

- quote for those with certain specialised manual skills. [See 3 for details]

(b) Position after 1997

The position beyond 1997 is set out in the British memorandum associated with the Joint Declaration. The new status of British National (Overseas) created in 1986 will carry benefits similar to those enjoyed by BDTCs, such as entitlement to use a passport and to receive British consular protection in third countries. not be transmissible to later generations.
