The Governor of Hong Kong pays regular visits to China, as did his predecessor. They have always been received at a very senior
level by those responsible for Hong Kong affairs. On his most
recent visit, Sir D Wilson also had a meeting with the Chinese
Premier Li Peng. The two Governments both welcome these contacts.
In addition, there are many opportunities for discussion of Hong
Kong issues, including the. Basic Law, at official level. Contacts
have taken place between the British Embassy in Peking and the
Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs; between my officials here and
the Chinese Embassy; between Hong Kong Government officials and
Chinese officials now based there; and between legal and technical
experts.
