We are doing all we can in Hong Kong through the Department of Trade and Industry and the British Trade Commission to encourage and
develop British interest in the territory. In 1988 there were 20 DTI-sponsored joint ventures at international exhibitions. This year Britain will be actively involved in the official opening of
the new Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. At the
invitation of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council we shall be
mounting on all-British trade exhibition, "Britain in Hong Kong",
and the British Council will be mounting an education exhibition,
the largest ever held in Asia.
These efforts will continue up to and beyond 1997. But in the
final analysis our success in Hong Kong, as in other market, depends
on the quality of our products and the enthusiam of our
?
entrepreneurs, rather than on the level of official or government sponsored representation.
There is no reason why British enterprise should not continue to flourish after 1997 as it is doing now.
Consulate-General
Britain will obviously continue to have significant interests in
Hong Kong beyond 1997. We are already planning for a well-located and prominent Consulate-General after 1997.
Much work remains to be done. But on present planning the
Consulate will be a very sizeable mission, and amoungst our biggest
posts. It will have a full range of work to do (political,
commercial economic, consular, information, etc).
