UNHCR

SUPPORT FOR UNHCR

We announced in September a contribution of £1 million towards

UNHCR expenditure in Hong Kong. Have also confirmed that we shall

contribute a further £1 million in 1989. Tangible evidence of our

concern to relieve Hong Kong's problem in every way open to us.

Close consultation with UNHCR on all aspects of the new policy.

Screening is on basis of established international criteria. UNHCR

can monitor screening, assist in appeals, have access to all boat

people.

UNHCR have appealed for financial contributions towards programme

of returnees. We have announced we will contribute $US 125,000.

Hong Kong Government contributing similar sum.
