Position after 1997
The position beyond 1997 is set out in the British memorandum associated with the Joint Declaration. The new status of British National (Overseas) created in 1986 will carry benefits similar to those enjoyed by BDTCs, such as entitlement to use a passport and to receive British consular protection in third countries. But will not be transmissable to later generations.
