Passports for Hong Kong businessmen/professionals

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD BE MADE FOR BUSINESSMEN

Arrangements already exist to permit businessmen from anywhere in the world to enter Britain and settle here, under certain conditions. Businessmen can be granted entry for settlement purposes if they invest £150,000 in a way which creates two new jobs. Settled status is granted after 4 years' residence and citizenship after 5. But Home Secretary has considerable discretion to allow absences during qualifying period.

These arrangements are broadly at least as favourable as those in other countries which are known to attract businessmen from Hong

Kong.

No question of making special arrangements for people of Hong

Kong alone.

Conscious of need fully to uphold our responsibility to encourage stability and investment in Hong Kong.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR PROFESSIONALS/PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL SKILLS

Britain does not have a quota system for people will specific professional skills. But our Immigration Rules do allow for talented and experienced people to come here as employees.

Prospective employer has to apply for work permit for such a person and has to show that post which is offered requires a high level of skill and experience and is one for which no resident labour is available. Person admitted with work permits who remains in approved employment for 4 years can apply for settlement and citizenship after further year.

Would not be appropriate to single out people from Hong Kong for favourable treatment.
