FAC: ORAL BRIEFING AT THE FCO ON WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH AT 10 AM

1.

The Clerk has informed me that he would expect all Members of the Committee who are making visits to Hong Kong and Peking to be present for the Oral Briefing. This will mean if, as expected, all those Members of the FAC do attend, their party will number 12 in all (9 MPs and 3 Clerks).

2. In order that I can make the necessary arrangements for seating and catering, I would be grateful if you could let me know who, on the briefing side, you anticipate will attend the briefing session and the lunch. The Secretary of State has already make it clear he will not be able to remain beyond 12.30 pm.

3.

The Clerk hopes to let me have, on Monday, some advance

Y indication of what ground MPs are likely to want to cover

during the Oral Briefing. He has emphasised, however, that the Committee will not want to be handed any written. material.

4. In regard to the format for the Briefing, I have noted that the Secretary of State envisages a short opening statement of perhaps 15 minutes followed by a question and answer session. I attach a proposed programme and would be grateful for any comments.
