1. As I mentioned to you on the telephone, during a call on Mr Millington, the new counsellor at the Chinese Embassy Mr Lin Zhiying raised the question of the FAC visit in general terms. It was a very informal call, and we had just touched on the Royal Visit to China and Hong Kong in the autumn of this year. Mr Lin said that the visit by the Select Committee was also a very important event. He said that often misunderstandings could be avoided and sorted out when both sides sat down and learned more about the other's position.

2. Only a little straw in the wind, but perhaps an encouraging one.
