Thank you for your letters of 23 and 25 February and
the enclosures. The editorials in the Hong Kong Law Journal
emphasise, if that were needed, the importance of this
matter.
I am now able to let you know in confidence that
Mr Justice Barker has submitted his resignation to the
Governor with effect from 1 January 1989. This has been
accepted and Mr Justice Barker will be assigned to
non-judicial duties in the interim. An announcement to this effect will be made in Hong Kong very shortly. In
the meantime I should be grateful if you would treat the
matter in strict confidence.
