AMENDMENTS) ORDINANCE 1988

(No. 49 of 1988)

This Ordinance amends the District Court Ordinance to increase the financial jurisdiction of the District Court. in matters of contract and tort from $60,000 to $120,000 and, in land related matters, to extend to land the rateable value of which does not exceed $100,000. The Small Claims Tribunal Ordinance is amended to increase the jurisdiction of the Small Claims Tribunal from $8,000 to $15,000.

2. The Ordinance also amends the District Court Ordinance to restrict the application of section 46 (which excludes the defence of infancy in certain matters of civil liability) to debts and liabilities within the former jurisdiction of the District Court.

3. The Ordinance also makes minor textual amendments to the provisions relating to appeals in the Labour Tribunal Ordinance and the Small Claims Tribunal Ordinance.

Before the Governor assented to the Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, the Attorney General advised that he could properly do so.
