Miss Doyle said that they were trying but that they had

not got full control. She had a provincial senator coming

this week whom she would brief but she had no idea what he

would say.

All in all the combined exercise in Ottawa and

here has probably been worthwhile. I think myself that would have been best to have spoken to Miss Doyle first about the Finance Minister episode. (It sounded to me

that she had already had a report on the discussion in

Ottawa). Unfortunately the opportunity which I planned

for this on 18 March did not work out. But it does no

harm to impress on the Canadians that we are concerned and

to give Miss Doyle more ammunition to put our case (which I think she does genuinely try to do).
