The principal reasons for emigrating were stated by those about to depart, as follows:-

Lack of confidence in H.K's future Concern for their children

To join family already abroad Fear that "the door will close" Better career opportunities abroad Better living environment abroad

Many respondents quoted more than one reason for emigrating.

7. Principal Reasons for Lack of Confidence post 1997

1) fear that their freedom would be restricted;

ii)

fear that quality of life would worsen;

frequent changes in internal policies of PRC;

iv)

doubt about ability of PRC to maintain stability and prosperity in Hong Kong;

v)

fear for the safety and welfare of the intellectuals and the wealthy in light of cultural revolution.

I trust the above information will prove illuminating. Further surveys are being planned by my Institute to widen the survey field and so improve the reliability of the data and also to focus on the most vulnerable areas, namely, the professional and managerial groups of employees.
