A series of telephone surveys to monitor the trend of public opinion in respect of perceived problems in Hong Kong, the Government's overall performance and the expectation of the general situation were started in January 1983 by the former Home Affairs Branch. The current survey, the nineteenth in the series, is the sixth conducted by CNTA. This paper presents the major findings of the current survey, together with comparisons of the findings from previous surveys.

The survey WAS carried out by
by telephone interviews
between 1800 2200 hours from 7 December to 11 December 1987. It was hased on a systematic random sample of residential telephone numbers contained in the Current telephone directories. Within the household(s) of selected telephone number, a respondent aged 15 to 64 was randomly selected for interview. The questionnaire is shown at Annex I,

About 90% of households in Hong Kong have telephones. Those without telephones usually belong 20 the lower income It is likely that people in this group may be under-represented in the aurvey.

Of the 3220 telephone calls made, 2444 households were successfully contacted, representing & contact rate of 76%. The unsuccessful calls of 776 were mainly cases where telephones were disconnected/out of order or nobody answered the phone after three attempts were made at different times and
different dates. Among the
