TELEVISION (AMENDMENT) ORDINANCE 1988

The purpose of this Ordinance is to amend and extend
the law relating to television.

The Ordinance's main provisions are
to regulate, by means of limits and otherwise, the holding of interests in a company licensed under the Television Ordinance ("licensees");
to regulate the holding or acquisition by licensees of shares of or interests in other companies;
to prohibit the granting of licences under the Television Ordinance to subsidiaries;
(i) to change the residence requirement of directors of licensees to one requiring ordinary residence in Hong Kong for the time being plus at least one previous continuous period of such residence of not less than 7 years; and
(ii) to abolish the requirement that such directors be Commonwealth citizens;
to enable such licences to be suspended;

to enable the Broadcasting Authority

(i) to grant a permission for the retention of shares in licensees (or some of such shares) in limited circumstances where the limits specified in the Ordinance are exceeded;
(ii) to require a person whose holding of such shares contravenes such limits to divest himself of so many of the shares as is necessary to terminate the contravention;
to enable the Governor in Council, for the purposes of transmitting sound or visual images, or both, subject to certain exceptions, to direct a licensee to connect his telecommunication installation to
