the scale of the commitment the United Kingdom has already made;
what other countries have done and are likely to do;
the ability of the new arrangements in Hong Kong and the continuing discussions with Vietnam limit the size of the remaining problem;
the likelihood of more Vietnamese settling successfully in the United Kingdom, bearing in mind the experience of earlier arrivals, and given that a substantial proportion of those still in camps in Hong Kong are likely to be without the sorts of aptitudes that point towards successful integration in the West such as language skills, educational qualifications, relevant work experience.
How well have those Vietnamese refugees which have already been accepted for resettlement by Britain integrated into society here... what difficulties
have they faced?
Most Vietnamese refugees speak little or no English on arrival, are unfamiliar with Western culture, and come from rural rather than urban backgrounds. They bring no material assets with them and are therefore, initially at least, dependent on welfare benefits of various kinds. When the first large numbers of Vietnamese refugees arrived here in the late seventies and early eighties there was no pre-existing community of Vietnamese people here to give support- though this has now changed. Language differences, lack of usable skills inevitably contributed to the difficulties the Vietnamese faced, and still face, in obtaining employment. levels remain high.
