Mr Secretary General [Mr Chairman], the calling of this

conference, and the commitments which have been made of

increased resettlement and increased funding for UNHCR have

already brought great encouragement to those like myself who

have to cope directly with the problem of refugees from

Vietnam. So too has the mobilisation of world opinion which

you have brought to focus on this problem. I would like to

thank you for the enthusiasm and perseverance with which you and

the High Commissioner have worked to make this conference a

success.

But all these efforts will have been wasted unless what

has been said here during these past two days results in

practical measures. The human tragedy which still confronts

us all cannot and must not be shelved. Mr Secretary General

[Mr Chairman], we look to your wisdom and guidance to see us

through to the right solution to this awesome problem.
