asylum as a first step in this process. place June 5-7, 1988 in Washington, D.C.

This meeting will take

Our objectives are:

1. To clearly identify the refugee-related problems facing

the countries of first asylum (in Southeast Asia) and to get their recommendations on both short and long range solutions;

2. To gather input from Indochinese-American leaders and to

define relevant areas of responsibility for their respective communities; and

3. To urge the international community to maintain their

commitments to first asylum countries in terms of refugee resettlement while working on durable solutions.

In order to do this, we need your assistance. We would like to invite your government to send a designated representative to:

1. Present the viewpoint of the Hong Kong government on DAY

ONE of the symposium (see tentative agenda); and

2. Serve informally as an expert resource person throughout

the remainder of this two and a half day symposium.

After consultation with the cffice of the U.S. Coordinator for Refugee Affairs, your name has been suggested for consideration.

In closing, we would like to add that this is a private sector effort, designed primarily to provide a forum within which people can share ideas and problems as we work together towards possible solutions. It is an essential preparatory step that provides an opportunity for interested parties to discuss and formulate practical recommendations for a government-to-government level conference to be convened at a later date.

We sincerely hope our invitation will be accepted. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your kind assistance.

Most sincerely,

Kananthre

Le Xuan khoa President
