JOINT COMMUNIQUE BY MALAYSIA AND VIETNAM

1.
At the invitation of the Government of the Socialist
Republic of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Abdul Ghafar
bin Baba paid an official friendship visit to Vietnam from August
26 to 29, 1988. Accompanying him were Minister of Foreign Affairs
Dato' Haji Abu Hassan Bin Haji Omar and many other high-ranking
Malaysian officials. While in Vietnam, the Delegation paid tribute
to late President Ho Chi Minh at His Mausoleum. The Delegation
were received by President of the Council of State Vo Chi Cong
and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Do Muoi, with whom they
had cordial talks..
Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghafar Bin Baba and Minister
of Foreign Affairs Dato' Haji Abu Hassan Bin Haji Omar had talks
with Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Minister of
Foreign Affairs Nguyen Co Thach. The talks took place in an
atmosphere of co-operation, mutual respect and understanding.
2. The discussions between the two sides centred on problems
created by the increasing number of Vietnamese boat people and
agreed that realistic and effective measures are urgently required
to resolve those problems in a humanitarian manner and in conformity
with their good neighbourly relations. The two sides also exchanged
views on bilateral relations, international and regional questions
of mutual interest. Both sides were satisfied with the results
