Commissioner is able to involve the office in the
screening procedure. It is necessary that UNHCR 18
seen to play a central role Trom the outset not only in
accordance with its traditional Leadership role on this
issue, but in order to encourage the development of
other similar regional arrangements for the future
handling of the screened out.
Australia will continue to play its part in
actively pursuing non-resettlement durable solutions,
together with all parties attected by the Indochinese
outflow situation. In particular concerted efforts
should continue to engage the country of origin
accepting its responsibilities, including acceptance of
the principle of return on the basis or internationally
recognised conditions. we anticipate that the ASEAN
Foreign Minister's meeting in Bangkok in July will
provide opportunity to further the pursuit of new
solutions.
