In paragraph 3 of your letter of 2 June to Chris Wood you noted David Kersey's question about what would happen to Vietnamese Boat People in Hong Kong after 1997. We intend that the problem should be resolved before 1997. However, the Joint Declaration on the future of Hong Kong provides for the continuation after 1997 of Hong Kong's present social and legal systems. Any Vietnamese Boat People then in Hong Kong should thus retain their current status.
